In 2008 when Kashmir witnessed a mass uprising towards the land switch to the Amarnath Shrine board, Zeenatul Islam, then 20, was arrested underneath Public safety Act (PSA) via the state police for working as over underground worker (OGW) for militants.

A resident of Sugan Zanipura area of south Kashmir’s Shopian district, Zeenat-ul-Islam was once speculated to be in contact with many militant outfits and used to be facilitating them.

Speaking to ioktimes over phone, his father, Ghulam Hassan Shah stated: “he is my eldest son and has three-years-old daughter at home. He used to be arrested in 2008 and later he joined militancy. In view that then we hardly ever had his idea. Even, today an army officer called me to contact my son and tell him to surrender earlier than them. I replied him that how am i able to?

Zeenat-ul-Islam had three siblings and his father is a farmer. He was once imprisoned for three years and used to be released in 2011.

At that time the valley had witnessed two mass uprisings in which more than 375 civilians were killed. Majority of them getting killed for the period of protests at the hands of the government forces.

The quandary had created chaos and anger among people. Considering that then, young boys, almost always knowledgeable ones have been taking the path of militancy in gigantic numbers despite getting killed in anti-militancy operations.

Although, Kashmir valley has witnessed a surge in militant recruitment, it’s the southern part of the valley that has seen enormous number of adolescence taking the path of gun.

Islam used to be one in all the many to have chosen the similar path.

He joined Lashkar-eToiba (LeT), a militant outfit operated from Pakistan in November 2015 and later switched to Al-Badr.

Before becoming a member of militancy, he used to be helping his father economically and have been struggling to pay the bills.

In between, he accomplished his Bachelors in Arts and got married.

Viewed as an Improvised explosive device (IED) expert, Islam joined militant ranks in 2015. He was once now commander of Al Badr outfit.

A key recruiters Zeenat used to be considered one of three militants surviving from Army’s record of 12 most wanted militants. Ansar Ghazwat ul Hind chief Zakir Musa is the top one.

Islam is alleged to be one of the vital accused in the Shopian deadly assault carried by means of the militants in 23 February 2017, where three forces personnel and one woman was killed.


After four years he survived as a militant, Islam along with his associate was killed in a brief gunfight with governmnet forces at Kathpora village in Yaripora area of south kashmir’s Kulgam district.
